VoIP infrastructure systems provider Sonus Networks announced on Wednesday that it appointed Vikram Saksena as the company's new chief scientist.

Specifically, in his role as chief scientist, Saksena will direct the development of the company's wireless systems in order to target government agencies.

“Since the company’s inception, Sonus has been the driving force behind some of the industry’s most groundbreaking achievements and has helped the world’s communications networks realize the benefits of IP-based voice technology," said Saksena. “I look forward to helping Sonus continue that legacy in my new role as Chief Scientist.”

Saksena joined Sonus in 2003. He most recently served as chief architect. During that time, he was responsible for developing next generation technologies and service provider systems. Saksena will bring more than twenty years of telecom experience to his new post, including a sixteen year stint at AT&T (News - Alert), where he served as chief technologist of the Data Networking Business Unit.

“This is an exciting announcement for both Sonus and the industry at large. Vikram is one of the great innovators in the telecom industry, and has been an invaluable thought leader at Sonus,” said Sonus’ chairman and CEO Hassan Ahmed in a statement. “In this new position, Vikram will further Sonus’ advanced development initiatives that have helped to define Sonus as one of the most innovative and inspired telecommunication companies in the world.”

Sonus made news last month when it announced it was selected by Cable & Wireless as its supplier of its next-generation IP-voice network. The new deal will allow Cable & Wireless to deploy an IP-voice network, which delivers primary line local, long-distance and international telephony service.

Cable and Wireless operates in 34 countries around the world, including 14 islands in the Caribbean. Through this partnership, the company will initially deploy its Sonus-based network to support the Caribbean Islands and Bermuda. In select markets, Cable and Wireless plans to eventually replace its infrastructure with Sonus' IMS-ready access system.
